Top 10 Things to do in Lakes Entrance

1 - Hit the 90 Mile Beach.

Head over the Cunningham Arm Footbridge to the 90 Mile Beach to swim between the flags at the Patrolled Main Beach. With the Lakes Entrance Surf Life Saving Club watching over you, you can feel at ease – just don’t forget to slip, slop, slap!!

Breathe in that fresh salty air, close your eyes and listen to the waves rolling in.

“Yes” - you have just chosen the perfect destination for your holiday.

While you are soaking up the sun on the 90 Mile Beach take some time to build sandcastles in the sand, bury your friends in the sand up to their shoulders or dig a hole to China, just try not to lose your keys at the beach or you’ll have to offer an ice cream as a prize to the child that finds them, and then watch as the ice cream falls out of the cone onto the footpath. With Beachcomber Holiday Units being located straight across the road from the Cunningham Arm footbridge it makes it easily the best located accommodation in Lakes Entrance for a beach holiday.

2 – Stroll the Entrance Walk.

Our personal favourite thing to do is the Entrance walk starting just over the Cunningham Arm footbridge heading west up to the Entrance. This walk is 5km round trip and has a bit of sand, steps, boardwalk and bush track. At the entrance you may be lucky enough to see Australian Fur Seals hanging out on the rocks on the other side of the entrance. You may also see the resident Burranan dolphins that live in the lakes system. You will definitely see and hear some beautiful native bird life. We like to walk back along the lake side and read the historical signs and learn about the history of Lakes Entrance however you can walk back along the 90 Mile Beach.

3 – Explore the Gippsland Lakes by Boat

The best way to explore the Gippsland Lakes is by Cruise. We have two extremely informative cruise companies offering a variety of different cruises. Peels Cruises have been cruising the lakes for over 100 years and have 3 different boats the Thunderbird, the Seabird and the Stormbird Cruise which does the popular Metung Luncheon Cruise. Lonsdale Eco Cruises have scenic cruises with scones (and seem to have some special magnet for the dolphins) head to their Facebook page to see some awesome photos of our beautiful marine and wildlife.

Skipper Pete at Lakes Explorer Sea-safari and water taxi is the man to see if you what to know anything about of marine and bird life. He can provide both educational tours as well as water taxi services.

4 – Mini Golf

Lakes Entrance has 4 Mini Golfs to choose from they are all different and the perfect opportunity for a bit of family competition. If you can’t chose which one then why not try them all.

5 – See the Entrance 6 ways

Lakes Entrance is named after the man made entrance of the Bass Straight into the Gippsland Lakes. It is a picturesque sight and one that you can view from many angles. Set yourself a goal to see it in as many ways as you can.

  • Via helicopter with Lakes Entrance Helicopters

  • Via Segway with Lakes Entrance Segway Tours

  • Via Jemmy’s Point Lookout in Kalimna

  • Via cruise boat

  • Via the Entrance Walk

  • On the water by kayak or stand up paddle board

6 – Fish the Gippsland Lakes

Over the past couple of years Lakes Entrance has become known for Big Game Fishing bringing many anglers to the area. If you are wanting to try your luck out there deep sea fishing then we have a few charter company’s for you to choose or if you are happy to stay within the Gippsland Lakes system and try your luck with both fishing and crabbing then can take you either in the lake or out in the ocean. For deep sea fishing there is Far out Fishing or in the lakes the lakes we highly recommend Lakes Charter Fishing Lakes Entrance.

You can also have a lot of fun hiring a putt putt boat and heading out to explore the wonderful lake system for yourself. Along the North Arm you will have a choice of 3 different boat hire companies Portside boat hire, Victor hire boats or Blue Riviera hire boats – Check out the BBQ boats for hire as well.

If you want to sit back and try your luck you can also throw a line in and fish off one of our many jetty’s or try your luck catching a big one surf fishing. If you fancy having a night time fish you could also give prawning in the lakes a go.

7 - Purchase Seafood Direct from the Trawler

Lakes Entrance is known for its wonderful fishing fleet. You can buy fresh seafood and prawns direct from the trawlers – just look for the signs along the Esplanade (opposite RSL, McDonalds and BWS) advertising what they have caught. If they have sold out early don’t fear because you can head to the Lakes Co-op on Bullock Island to watch the boats unload and purchase their catch from Off the Wharf.

8 – Rail Trail

Pack your bikes and spend the day hitting the rail trail. See the countryside as rail passengers once did passing rolling farmland, forests and historic bridges. In total it is just under 100km in length with a 25km link to Lakes Entrance via the Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail.

9 – Buchan Caves

At Buchan Caves you can take a ranger-guided tour through a choice of either the “Fairy Cave” or “Royal Cave”. You will wonder at the cave formations and return full of so much information that you feel could become a ranger yourself. Make sure that you call ahead to book your tour 0351621900 or head to the website. Located 45 minute drive away be sure to stop in and have a great pub meal at the Buchan Caves Hotel.

10 – Raymond Island

Raymond Island or as some of our guests call it “Koala Island”. Raymond Island is the ideal place to see koalas in the wild. An easy one hour drive and ferry trip from Paynesville once you are on the island simply follow the sign posts to walk around the streets, look up in the trees and once you spot one koala you’ll will start to see more. We always recommend that you park your car in Paynesville and walk onto the ferry over to Raymond Island it is free for pedestrians and a small cost for your car but you don’t need your car you will not see the koalas looking out your car window. (You may need to pack aero guard they have a couple of mosquitos over there).

These top 10 activities are just a small percentage of the many things to do in and around Lakes Entrance. Check out our Website, Facebook and Instagram to see more activities and events around East Gippsland.
